A View from the Well

Lesson 15 of 32 May 9, 2022

During the class, the teacher opened by honoring mothers and acknowledging a couple of scriptural citation errors, including a mis‑quoted 2 Timothy reference. He then used the ancient Near‑Eastern well as a metaphor, recounting Joseph’s rescue from a pit (Genesis 42:21) and the Israelites’ oppression by Midian (Judges 6:1). The lesson progressed to describe Israel’s spiritual decline when there was “no king” (Judges 21:25) and every person acted according to personal judgment, creating a moral vacuum. The focus shifted to Gideon, a young and seemingly unlikely leader who stood firm in faith despite Israel’s discouragement. By trusting God’s direction rather than human wisdom, Gideon demonstrated how God can lift a people out of a spiritual “well.” The teaching concluded with practical steps for believers to recognize when they are in a pit of discouragement and to seek divine rescue, encouraging them to rely on God’s promises found throughout Exodus and the earlier covenant narratives.

Genesis 42:21

And they said, Truly, we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not listen.

Judges 21:25
