Sunday Morning Sermon - I Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb

Lesson 3 of 9 July 7, 2019

Richard Sutton delivered a sermon that drew parallels between American patriots' pledge of independence and Christians' pledge of allegiance to Jesus Christ. The teacher began by establishing the historical context of the Declaration of Independence, emphasizing how fifty-six wealthy men risked their lives, fortunes, and families by signing a document of treason against the most powerful empire of their time. These patriots made a bold declaration, paid an enormous price (over 23,700 casualties during the Revolutionary War), and ultimately reaped the reward of freedom and independence for the nation. Sutton then applied this framework to Christian discipleship. When a person becomes a Christian, they likewise make a bold declaration—confessing with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believing in their heart that God raised Him from the dead (Romans 10:9-10). This confession represents pledging allegiance to the Lamb of God, surrendering one's loyalty, devotion, and dedication to Christ as the master of life. Just as the patriots understood they would pay a price for their freedom, Christians must understand that discipleship carries a cost. The teacher referenced the Ray Boltz song "I Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb," which illustrates how early Christians faced persecution and were forced to choose between renouncing Christ or facing death. The central message emphasized that authentic Christian commitment requires understanding both the declaration made at conversion and the willingness to pay whatever price following Jesus demands.
