Reset - The Church’s Fashion

Lesson 8 of 53 February 22, 2021

In this class, Richard Sutton began by using fashion trends as an engaging analogy to explore a deeper spiritual truth about the church. He traced how clothing styles, hairstyles, and cultural expressions have shifted dramatically from the 1970s through the 2020s, demonstrating that worldly values and appearances are constantly in flux. However, Sutton pivoted to the central message that while society and even churches may change their external appearance and cultural expressions, there remain constant, unchanging principles about what the church truly is and should be. Sutton emphasized that outward appearances can be deceiving—a large megachurch might seem cold but be genuinely warm; a small country church nestled in trees might appear intimate but harbor internal conflict; a historic stone building with ivy might seem theologically deep but be spiritually empty. He challenged the congregation to look beyond surface-level impressions and external fashion statements to understand the authentic nature of the church. Sutton pointed to Jesus's declaration in Matthew 16:18 as both predictive and promising, suggesting that Christ's original design for His church contains timeless principles that require constant reset and realignment, regardless of cultural trends or contemporary repackaging of ancient ideas.

Matthew 16:18

You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.
