Forgiven, Forgiving and Free - Larry Johnson - 6_22-2022

Lesson 12 of 13 June 23, 2022

Larry Johnson taught that understanding and practicing forgiveness is essential to Christian living. He reviewed Jesus' model of forgiveness on the cross—"Father, forgive them for they know not what they do"—and showed how even humans like Stephen and Philip demonstrated this same forgiving spirit. The class identified three primary barriers to forgiveness: pride (manifested as a desire for vengeance), fear (often disguised as anger), and ignorance (not knowing how to proceed). Johnson argued that addressing pride requires focusing on God's grace and recognizing God's blessings in our own lives, as exemplified by Esau who overcame his desire to revenge Jacob's deception by recognizing he lacked nothing, and Joseph who refused vengeance despite his brothers' betrayal because God had blessed him abundantly. To overcome fear, believers must trust God's promises to bless those who curse them and love their enemies. Ignorance is best addressed through seeking wise counsel from others in the faith community. The class emphasized that love—wanting the best for those who hurt us and trusting God with justice and mercy—should guide our forgiveness, freeing us from the burdens of pride, fear, and unforgiveness.

Luke 23:34

Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

Acts 7:60

Lord, do not hold this sin against them.
