Forgiving

Lesson 13 of 13 June 30, 2022

The class on June 29, 2022 focused on the interwoven themes of forgiveness, personal freedom, and the role of boundaries in the Christian life. Larry Johnson reviewed the previous week’s discussion, emphasizing that pride, fear, and ignorance are the primary obstacles to forgiving others. He explained that pride manifests as a desire for vengeance, fear appears as anger, and ignorance shows up as feeling powerless, offering solutions such as focusing on God’s grace, trusting Him, and seeking counsel. He then highlighted that forgiveness does not require an apology or repentance from the offender; withholding forgiveness is a self‑destructive, prideful act that harms both the individual and their relationship with God. Larry described the components that empower forgiveness—open communication, a proper mindset, a pure heart, and clear boundaries—illustrating how boundaries protect believers even after they forgive. Scripture references like Proverbs 22:3, Job 7:11, Psalm 22:1, Psalm 13:1, and 2 Corinthians 4:16 were woven throughout, guiding the discussion toward understanding suffering and how God uses trials to refine and prepare us for eternal glory.

Proverbs 22:3

The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.

2 Corinthians 4:16-17

So we do not lose heart, though our outer self is wasting away. Our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison.
