Committed to Eternity

Lesson 5 of 52 February 3, 2025

In the February 2, 2024 class titled “Committed to Eternity,” the teacher centered the message on Paul’s exhortation in Philippians 3:13‑14 to forget the past and press forward toward the heavenly calling. He emphasized that true commitment means seeking an intimate knowledge of Jesus, not merely intellectual familiarity, and that this pursuit shapes our attitude toward eternity, a timeless existence beyond our earthly life. The lesson illustrated the urgency of eternity with vivid examples, including the late basketball coach Jim Valvano’s reflection on life after a terminal cancer diagnosis and Tim McGraw’s song about living fully when faced with death. These stories underscored that earthly achievements are fleeting compared to the everlasting destiny promised to believers. The teacher also announced upcoming congregation events—such as the 4 p.m. encouragement meeting and the Ocean Bridge mini‑seminar—to equip members for evangelism and deeper discipleship, urging everyone to press on with a focus on the eternal prize. Overall, the class called the congregation to re‑evaluate priorities, to nurture a personal relationship with Christ, and to live each day with purpose, laughter, and perseverance, keeping eternity at the forefront of every decision.

Philippians 3:12-14

Not that I have already reached the goal, or am already perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize of God's upward calling in Christ Jesus.
