Sunday Morning Sermon

Lesson 6 of 52 February 10, 2025

In this sermon, Clint Davison challenged the congregation to commit to a life focused on Jesus Christ rather than being consumed by constant comparison with others. He opened by reiterating the church's 2025 theme of "I Press On" and encouraged members to commit to various spiritual practices: attending Bible class, worship services, and growing in their faith. Davison emphasized that Sunday evening worship and Wednesday night Bible class are not optional alternatives but essential times for community and spiritual growth. The primary focus of the message addressed the modern struggle with comparison, amplified by social media. Using Jonathan Haidt's "The Anxious Generation" as a reference point, Davison illustrated how believers unconsciously compare their jobs, homes, abilities, and possessions with others, leading to discontent and spiritual compromise. He presented the biblical principle that "when we choose to care, we're less likely to compare," emphasizing the need to see people as individuals with souls and struggles rather than as competitors. Drawing from Galatians 5:19 and the concept of "the works of the flesh," Davison explained how self-centeredness and the desire to have one's own way naturally leads to depersonalization of others. He called the congregation to treat people as God treats them—with recognition of their inherent worth and importance. The underlying message encouraged contentment in one's relationship with Jesus Christ, not complacency, as the antidote to the comparison cycle.
