Genesis part 2

Lesson 7 of 8 March 3, 2019

The class focused on Genesis chapter 50, recounting Jacob’s final days, Joseph’s tender farewell, and the elaborate Egyptian mourning period. The teacher highlighted the 40‑day embalming process (Genesis 50:4) and explained how Joseph’s respectful petition to Pharaoh (verses 5‑6) led to the king’s approval for Jacob’s burial in Canaan (verse 7). This narrative illustrated Joseph’s loyalty and the high regard the Egyptian officials held for him, underscoring themes of honor, obedience, and divine promise. The discussion also returned to Genesis 48, where Jacob blessed Joseph and referenced the land of Shechem taken from the Amorites “with sword and bow.” The teacher noted the ambiguity of this verse and encouraged students to research the historical context. Interwoven with the biblical study, the teacher offered personal reflections on Earth’s design, linking recent Martian water discoveries to the wisdom of a Creator. The class concluded with a prayer of gratitude for God’s creation and for the lessons learned from Jacob’s family, urging believers to apply these insights in daily decisions.

Genesis 50:4-7

When the time of sorrow had ended, Joseph spoke to the officers of Pharaoh's court, saying, 'If you think well of me, please tell this to Pharaoh: My father made me promise under oath that he would be buried in the land of Canaan, in the cave that he had prepared for himself. So let me go and bury my father, and then I will return.' Pharaoh said, 'Go, and bury your father, and then return.' Then Joseph went to bury his father, along with all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of Egypt.
