Keynote_ The Oneness of the Church – Gary Massey

Lesson 4 of 21 October 14, 2023

Brother Gary Massey opened the class by sharing personal anecdotes that illustrated the practical reality of Christian unity—from a heartfelt worship experience at Wembley Church of Christ in England to a roadside rescue in rural Kentucky that led to an unexpected act of kindness from a local Church of Christ. He used these stories to segue into the biblical doctrine of oneness, focusing on Ephesians chapter 4 where Paul calls believers to walk in humility, patience, and love, preserving the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Gary highlighted the seven repeated “one” statements in the passage, underscoring the theological significance of one body, spirit, hope, Lord, faith, baptism, and God. He then referenced Ephesians 1:22, pointing out that the church is explicitly called the body of Christ, and cited Matthew 16:18 where Jesus declares that He will build His church upon the rock of Peter’s confession. Gary clarified that the term “Godhead” in the KJV corresponds to the singular divine nature of God, warning against adding non‑biblical concepts like the Trinity. The class concluded with a call to cherish and protect the oneness of the church, urging members to live out this unity in everyday life.

Ephesians 4:4-6

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were also called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

Ephesians 1:22-23

And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body.

Matthew 16:18

And I say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
