Keynote_ Loving Your Neighbor – Chuck Monan

Lesson 3 of 21 October 14, 2023

The class began with a prayer and a warm welcome before turning to Luke 10:25‑37, where Jesus answered a lawyer’s question about inheriting eternal life by recounting the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The teacher emphasized that loving one’s neighbor is demonstrated through compassionate action, not merely intellectual assent. Building on that foundation, the discussion moved to 1 John 4, highlighting that true love originates from God and is manifested when believers love one another. The speaker identified gratitude as the missing link that often hinders believers from fully expressing neighborly love. Citing Deuteronomy 8, he warned against self‑reliance and urged the congregation to recognize God’s provision in all blessings. The class concluded with practical suggestions for cultivating a grateful heart, thereby enabling believers to love their neighbors more effectively and live out the command to "do likewise."

Luke 10:25-37

And behold, a lawyer stood up to test Him, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live." But he, desiring to justify himself, said, "Who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest came down that road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. Similarly a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, "Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back." Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?" He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "You go and do likewise."

1 John 4:7-12

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. This is love, that we walk in accordance with his commandments. This is the commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he commanded us. Those who believe in the name of his Son have God's love abiding in them, and God abides in them. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, "I love God," and hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. The commandment we have from him is that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he commanded us. And this is love, that we walk in his commandments. Whoever keeps the commandments of God abides in God, and God abides in him. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit.
