Forgiven, Forgiving and Free

Lesson 8 of 13 May 26, 2022

In this class, the teacher reviewed the four major atonement models presented by Brother Everett Ferguson: redemption (the marketplace view of Christ buying us back), justification (the courtroom view where believers are declared righteous despite guilt), reconciliation (the restoration of relationships), and victory (the warfare imagery of Christ’s triumph over evil). By linking each model to scriptural foundations—Matthew 16:18’s promise that the gates of hell will not prevail, Leviticus 17:11’s declaration that life is in the blood, and Romans 6:18’s teaching that believers become slaves to righteousness—the teacher showed how the blood of Christ is the central, life‑giving element that makes forgiveness possible. The discussion then turned to how believers can be assured of forgiveness. Drawing from Brother Dan Winkler’s alliterative guide, the teacher identified four certainties: the Bible’s testimony, the power of Christ’s blood, personal belief in Him, and the outward sign of baptism. The class concluded with a call to live out this forgiveness—experiencing peace with our past, extending grace to others, and trusting God’s ongoing provision—while celebrating the transformative power of the Lamb’s blood.

Leviticus 17:11

For the life of a creature is in its blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement on the altar...

Matthew 16:18

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
