Jesus is Our Savior - Wednesday Evening Class 6-1-2022

Lesson 9 of 13 June 2, 2022

The teacher began by reviewing the previous week's lesson on how we can know we're forgiven through the "Four B's": Bible (God's inspired word), Blood (Christ's redeeming power), Belief (trusting in Jesus), and Baptism (submitting to God's conditions). The class then focused on moving forward from guilt, shame, and regret by understanding that Satan attacks our confidence in testifying about God's mercy. The fundamental problem, the teacher explained, is that believers often focus on their own inadequate performance rather than on God's unchanging love, mercy, and faithfulness. Drawing on Revelation 12:11, the teacher showed that we conquer Satan through Christ's blood and our testimony, but Satan defeats us when we lose confidence in God's mercy or when we swing to either extreme: thinking we don't need Jesus because we're good enough, or believing we're too bad even for Christ to save. The solution involves regularly confessing sins, remembering that God is drawn to the penitent and broken-hearted, and deliberately focusing on the cross when spiritual security is questioned. The teacher emphasized that godly grief—sorrow over sin paired with trust in God's forgiveness—leads to repentance and salvation, while worldly grief leads to death. Multiple scriptures affirm that God's mercy is greater than all our sin and that failure is not final. The class concluded by exploring how an effective knowledge of Christ transforms our behavior and secures our salvation through practicing the qualities Peter describes in 2 Peter 1.

Psalms 34:18

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Hebrews 4:15

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
