Beyond the Valley

Lesson 5 of 5 July 20, 2023

In the class “Beyond the Valley,” Jeff Jenkins addressed the reality of grief, drawing from personal experience of losing his wife and biblical insight from Psalm 23. He explained that David’s words about walking through the valley of death were not merely about impending personal death, but about walking alongside a loved one through suffering and loss. Jenkins highlighted the uncertainty of life’s length and the longing for heaven, sharing anecdotes about a centenarian preacher who continued to preach, emphasizing that we cannot predict how long we will be here. He introduced David Kessler’s “sixth stage of grief” – finding meaning – and argued that moving beyond the traditional five stages involves honoring the deceased while seeking purpose in the present. Practical suggestions included honoring a spouse through remembrance, considering remarriage without feeling disloyal, and finding new productive pursuits. Throughout, he encouraged listeners not to compare grief timelines and to allow themselves grace as they navigate the healing process. The central message was that while grief is unique, finding meaning can transform it into hope and a renewed life direction. The class concluded with an invitation to keep seeking purpose and to join future worship hours for continued support. The teaching underscored that grief does not have a fixed timeline and that the Christian hope of eternity offers comfort. By integrating Scripture, personal testimony, and contemporary grief research, Jenkins pointed believers toward a future‑focused life that honors both the departed and the living.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
