Mending for Ministry

Lesson 46 of 49 December 5, 2022

In this class, the teacher began with a vivid illustration from his athletic past, recounting the repeated injuries to his knee and the surgical repairs required to mend his anterior cruciate ligament. He used that physical necessity for repair as a metaphor for the spiritual health of the Body of Christ, pointing out that just as ligaments hold a body together, the church has spiritual “ligaments” that ensure unity and growth. He then turned to Ephesians 4:11‑16, reading the passage and emphasizing two key ideas: the equipping of the saints for service and the role of each part of the body in being joined together by these supporting structures. The teacher explained that the Greek word translated as “equip” carries the sense of “mending” or “repair,” highlighting that the purpose of apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers is to restore and mature believers. He urged the congregation to assess the health of their fellowship, to work toward unity, truth spoken in love, and to recognize and fulfill the specific gifts God has given each member, thereby building up the church in love as a complete, mature body.

Ephesians 4:11-12

And he gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastor and teachers, for the equipment of the saints for the work of service to the building up of the body of Christ,

Ephesians 4:16

From whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
