Revelation

Lesson 7 of 36 May 24, 2021

The class opened with a brief review of the previously covered letters to the seven churches and then turned its focus to the church in Smyrna, as recorded in Revelation 2:8‑11. The teacher described Smyrna’s historical context—its wealth, its status as a Roman‑friendly city, and the intense persecution faced by early Christians there. He explained how Jesus, referred to as the First and the Last, commended the Smyrnan believers for their steadfastness despite poverty and tribulation, promising them a "crown of life" and victory over the second death. Throughout the lesson, the teacher linked the literal crown that adorned the city’s Acropolis with the spiritual crown promised to overcomers, emphasizing that suffering is a universal experience that refines faith. He also cited related passages—Revelation 1:17‑18, 1 Corinthians 15:20 and Colossians 1:18—to highlight Christ’s resurrection authority and preeminence. The central message encouraged the congregation to remain faithful unto death, trusting that God’s promises endure beyond earthly trials.

Revelation 2:8-11

And to the angel of the church in Smyrna write: The first and the last, who was dead, and has come to life, says this: I know your tribulations and your poverty (but you are rich), and the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.
