Revelation

Lesson 6 of 36 May 17, 2021

The class began with a vivid illustration of a decaying house, using it as a metaphor for a church that has lost its first love. The teacher then turned to Revelation 2:1‑7, reading the letter to the church in Ephesus and emphasizing Jesus’ commendation of their deeds, perseverance, and rejection of false apostles, followed by His lament that they had abandoned the love they once had. He highlighted the call to remember their former devotion, repent, and return to the deeds they did at first, warning that failure would result in the removal of their lampstand. Historical context was provided through Acts 18:18‑19 and 18:24‑26, showing how Paul, Priscilla, Aquila, and Apollos contributed to the early Ephesus church’s growth. The teacher described Ephesus’s strategic importance as a commercial hub and its notorious worship of Artemis, underscoring the challenges the believers faced. The central message concluded that, like the church in Ephesus, modern congregations must guard against spiritual complacency, heed the Spirit’s call, and strive to regain their first love in order to receive the promise of the Tree of Life.

Revelation 2:1-7

To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: "The one who holds the seven stars in his right hand, the one who walks among the seven golden lampstands, says this: I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot endure evil men, and that you put to test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not. And you found them to be false. And you have perseverance, and have endured for my name's sake, and have not grown weary. But I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent, and do the deeds you did at first, or else I am coming to you and remove your lampstand out of its place, unless you repent. Yet this you do have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God."
