A Better Rest - Guy Orbison - Lectureship 2017

Lesson 14 of 22 October 15, 2017

The class began with a lighthearted introduction of Guy Orbison before moving into a focused study of Hebrews chapter 3 and the first eleven verses of chapter 4. Guy explained that the Hebrew writer uses the term “rest” repeatedly to encourage believers to cease from their own efforts and rely on God’s finished work. He contrasted this spiritual rest with the physical rest promised to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 12:9, showing that the biblical concept of rest is rooted in cessation of striving rather than idle relaxation. Throughout the lesson, he highlighted the limited occurrences of the word in the New Testament—eight nouns and three verbs—to emphasize its importance and to help the audience grasp its theological weight. Guy also shared a personal story about a storm that knocked out his home’s electricity, using the experience to illustrate how unexpected trials can redirect us toward deeper reliance on God’s peace. He concluded by urging listeners to pursue the Sabbath‑rest that remains for God's people (Hebrews 4:9‑10), suggesting that true rest comes from trusting in Christ’s completed work rather than from our own attempts at self‑sufficiency.
