Commitment - Sunday Morning Sermon - Richard Sutton - May 31st

Lesson 32 of 50 May 31, 2020

The class opened with a warm greeting and anticipation for the upcoming in‑person worship on July 5th. The teacher highlighted Joshua 24:14, reminding the Israelites—and us today—of the crucial choice to serve the Lord or other gods, emphasizing personal commitment as the foundation of faithful living. He then linked this ancient call to Paul’s instruction in Philippians 3:7‑16, urging believers to keep Christ as their ultimate priority and to press on toward the divine calling. Continuing, the sermon explored the practical meaning of commitment through Psalm 37:5 and Proverbs 16:3, both urging believers to commit their ways to the Lord and trust Him for success. Real‑world analogies—boxers, marathon runners, soldiers, and missionaries—illustrated how steadfast dedication enables us to overcome trials, endure hardship, and influence others. The teacher concluded that a life marked by true commitment empowers Christians to rise after every fall, face opposition with grace, and live with an eternal perspective, ultimately reflecting Christ’s love to a watching world.

Joshua 24:14-15

Now therefore, fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and truth and put away the gods which your forefathers served beyond the river. That's the Euphrates and in Egypt and serve the Lord. And then he says something to them that is interesting. He says, if it is disagreeable to you in the sight of the Lord to serve him or if it's evil in your sight to serve him, then choose you this day whom you will serve. Whether it's going to be the gods of your fathers that is beyond the river or the gods of the Amorites and who land you now are living. You need to choose as for me and my house. We will serve the Lord.

Psalm 37:5

Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him and he will help you.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your actions to the Lord and your plans will succeed.
