Epic of First Samuel

Lesson 2 of 10 October 14, 2024

The class examined 1 Samuel 4, focusing on Israel’s defeat and the promise of God’s ultimate victory. The teacher explained how Samuel, now a judge, relayed God’s judgment against Eli’s priestly line, setting the narrative for the coming chapters. A major emphasis was placed on the Ark of the Covenant, also called the Ark of the Testimony, and its theological significance as the throne of God and the container of the covenant tablets, the jar of manna, and Aaron’s budding rod. Scriptural details from Exodus 25, Exodus 31, Numbers 17, and Hebrews 9 were reviewed to show how the Ark was constructed, covered, and guarded in the Holy of Holies. The lesson highlighted the contrast between God‑directed worship practices—such as the use of trumpets in Numbers 10—and Israel’s misguided decision to bring the Ark into battle without proper reverence, leading to disaster. References to Deuteronomy’s blessings and curses underscored the spiritual consequences of ignoring God’s commands. Throughout, the teacher connected these ancient events to the broader theme of God’s faithfulness despite human failure, encouraging the class to apply these lessons to contemporary faith life.

Exodus 25:10-16

And you shall make an ark of acacia wood, two and a half cubits long, and a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. And you shall overlay it with gold, inside and outside, and you shall make a crown of gold around it. And you shall cast for it four rings of gold, and put them on its four feet, two rings on one side of it, and two rings on the other side of it. And you shall make poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. And you shall put the poles into the rings, that the ark may be carried by them. And you shall make a mercy seat of pure gold, two and a half cubits long, and a cubit and a half wide. And you shall make two cherubim of gold, fashioning them with hammering. You shall make them with outstretched wings, and their faces shall look toward one another. And you shall set the mercy seat above the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony which I will give you. And I will meet with you there, above the mercy seat, between the two cherubim, which are on the ark of the testimony, and I will make my dwelling among the people of Israel.

Exodus 25:22

And there I will meet with you, and from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, I will speak to you about all that I will give you in commandment for the people of Israel.

Exodus 40:20-21

Then he took the testimony and put it into the ark, and attached the poles to the ark, and put the mercy seat on top of the ark. And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the veil for the screen, and screened off the ark of the testimony, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
