Genesis II Wendell Welch - Sunday Morning Class

Lesson 5 of 8 February 3, 2019

The class began with a reminder that the narratives of Judah and Tamar in Genesis 38 and Joseph’s sale to Egypt in Genesis 39 occur concurrently, not sequentially. Teacher Wendell Welch clarified the timeline, noting that while Judah was dealing with family issues, Joseph was being taken to Egypt, setting the stage for the parallel unfolding of God’s plans in different locations. The focus then shifted to Genesis 39, where Joseph resists the advances of Potiphar’s wife, leaves his coat behind, and is falsely accused, leading to his imprisonment. Despite the injustice, the Lord’s presence with Joseph ensured his success even in prison, earning the trust of the warden. The discussion moved to Genesis 40, describing how Joseph interpreted the dreams of the king’s cupbearer and baker, demonstrating his reliance on God for wisdom. The teacher highlighted Joseph’s integrity, his concern for others, and his request for remembrance, linking these traits to modern experiences of false accusations and character testing. Throughout, the lesson emphasized that steadfast righteousness, coupled with divine favor, can transform adverse circumstances into opportunities for testimony and advancement.

Genesis 39:6-12

After some time, the wife of Joseph's master began to desire Joseph, and one day she said to him, 'Have sexual relations with me.'... How can I do such an evil thing? It is sin against God.

Genesis 39:13-20

She kept his coat until her husband came home. And she told him the same story... Potiphar arrested Joseph and put him into the prison where the king's prisoners were put.
