Unanswered prayers

Lesson 8 of 11 December 4, 2022

The class began by examining why people create dreams, using personal anecdotes to illustrate how aspirations shape our lives. The teacher then shifted focus to the biblical concept of unanswered prayer, introducing the passage from 2 Samuel 7 where King David petitions the prophet Nathan to build a temple for the LORD. After reading verses 1‑3, 5‑6, 7, and 12‑16, the group discussed David’s heartfelt desire and God’s gentle refusal, noting that God had a larger plan involving David’s descendants and the eventual coming of the Messiah. Students reflected on how God’s “no” is not a rejection of their devotion but a redirection toward a greater purpose. Examples such as missionary aspirations and personal career goals highlighted the relevance of the principle today. The central message emphasized humility, trust in God’s timing, and the assurance that He provides blessings—even those not explicitly requested—when He chooses a different path for us.

2 Samuel 7:5-6

Then the prophet Nathan said to David, "Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you."

2 Samuel 7:12-16

When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the afflictions of sons of men. But my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. And your house and your kingdom shall endure before me forever, like the sun, and like the moon. It shall be established forever, and your kingdom shall be established securely for ever over Israel."
