Lectureship_ The Positive Attitude of Being a Christian

Lesson 10 of 15 October 14, 2018

Brother Keith Parker opened the class by declaring that Christians are called to be winners in a world of losers, highlighting the Bible’s emphasis on constant joy. He cited the shortest verse in the Greek New Testament, 1 Thessalonians 5:16, “Rejoice evermore,” and linked it with other joy commands in Matthew 5:12, Philippians 4:4, and 1 John 1:4, establishing a biblical foundation for a positive attitude. The core of the lesson focused on Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:38‑48, especially the directive in verse 41 to “go with him twain” when compelled to walk a mile. Keith explained that the first mile represents the law’s demand, while the second mile reflects the love‑filled response of the believer. Through stories and practical examples, he urged believers to love enemies, turn the other cheek, and adopt an optimistic, generous spirit, promising that living out Matthew 5:41 would bring personal happiness and strengthen the church. Concluding, Keith challenged the congregation to internalize these Scriptures, encouraging them to become a “great church” marked by joy, generosity, and a contagious positive outlook that reflects the character of Christ.

Matthew 5:38-48

You have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say unto you that ye resist not evil. But whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee. And from him that would bar thee, turn not thou away. You have heard that it hath been said. Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy. Oh, I say unto you, love your enemies. Love your enemies. Do good to them that hate you. Pray for them that despitefully use you and persecute you, that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven. For he maketh his Son to rise on the evil, and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just, and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, ha! What reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren, your brothers only, what do you more than others? Do not even the publicans, Gentiles so? Be ye therefore perfect, mature, complete, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.
