Before the Throne of God Above

Lesson 11 of 16 May 26, 2019

Teacher Clint Davison led the congregation through Revelation 4, exploring the significance of coming before God's throne. The class examined how Scripture depicts God's throne through vivid imagery in Isaiah 6, Daniel 7, and John's Revelation vision, emphasizing the awesome majesty and incomprehensible nature of God's glory. Davison defined beauty as a quality that gives intense pleasure and deep satisfaction to the mind, then illustrated how God's beauty surpasses all of creation. He noted that God is not only beautiful but is the source of all beauty in the universe. The teacher highlighted the structural significance of Revelation 4, pointing out that everything in the throne room scene radiates from and is focused around God on His throne—demonstrating that God is above all powers, kings, and created things. A major theme was holiness: the teacher observed that in contemporary culture, holiness is often misunderstood or dismissed, yet the throne room scene reveals that holiness is sacred and honored in God's presence. The four living creatures' repeated cry of "Holy, holy, holy" amplifies and emphasizes God's transcendent holiness beyond human comprehension. Finally, Davison emphasized that encountering God's holiness should humble humanity, reminding believers that we are not equals with God but creatures standing in awe before our Creator and King.
