Linder Road Church - Evening Sermon

Lesson 5 of 5 March 9, 2020

The teacher opened the evening by acknowledging the universal feeling of being at "the end of the rope" and invited the congregation to open their Bibles to 2 Kings 4. He described the widow’s dire situation—her husband, a prophet’s son, had died, leaving her in debt and facing the loss of her sons (Leviticus 25:39). Rather than seeking help from neighbors, she turned to Elisha, the prophet now operating independently of Elijah. The teacher highlighted Elisha’s questions, “What can I do for you?” and “What do you have in the house?” which revealed her only possession: a small jar of oil. By obeying Elisha’s instruction to gather empty vessels, the widow witnessed a miracle as the oil multiplied, providing enough to pay her debts. The lesson emphasized that God sees our desperate moments (Proverbs 15:3), cares for us (1 Peter 5:7), and uses our faith‑steps to bring about provision. The class concluded that even when problems seem insurmountable, God can turn our scarcity into abundance when we honestly assess our resources and trust His direction. The teacher urged students to apply this principle to modern struggles—relationships, finances, work, or spiritual dryness—by first turning to God, offering their circumstances, and acting in obedience to His counsel. The overarching message was that God’s plan encompasses our problems, and He is ever‑watching, ready to provide a way forward.
