Walk with Me

Lesson 9 of 11 September 12, 2022

In this Bible study class, Butch Amyx explored the significance of Jesus's prayers as recorded in the Gospel of Mark, focusing on three key moments. The lesson began with Mark 1:35, where Jesus withdrew to pray early in the morning before resuming his ministry, emphasizing his commitment to aligning with God’s will even amid overwhelming demands. The second prayer, found in Mark 6:44, occurred after Jesus miraculously fed 5,000 people, highlighting how prayer accompanied both miracles and the challenges of leadership. The class also referenced Mark 14:32-41, where Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, revealing his deep emotional struggle and total dependence on God. The central message underscored that prayer was central to Jesus’s identity and mission, serving as both a lifeline during crises and a model for believers. The teacher argued that Mark’s selective recording of these prayers reflects the Gospel’s focus on Jesus’s humanity and the redemptive power of prayer in overcoming adversity. This lesson invited participants to see prayer not just as a ritual, but as an essential discipline for navigating life’s challenges.

Mark 1:35

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place where he prayed.

Mark 6:44-46

The number of the men who had eaten was 5,000. Immediately, Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to Bethsaida while he dismissed the crowd. After leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.
