Witness Jesus Commission

Lesson 24 of 26 October 14, 2019

In this Bible study class, Kevin Hahn explored the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20, drawing parallels between military oaths and the Christian call to action. The lesson emphasized that Jesus’ commission to the church (even with imperfections like the eleven disciples) is rooted in divine authority, a personal call to allegiance, and a reliance on God’s strength. The teacher highlighted that the word ‘commission’ in Scripture is not a request but a command, exemplified by God’s direct commission of Joshua in Deuteronomy 31:23 and Isaiah’s enthusiastic response to God’s call in Isaiah 6:8. The class stressed that, like soldiers preparing for duty, Christians are called to ready themselves for service, even when faced with uncertainty or imperfect followers. This teaching reminded participants that while the disciples were not perfect, they were chosen and empowered by Jesus to fulfill His mission.

Matthew 28:18-20

Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.'
