Forgiven, Forgiving and Free

Lesson 4 of 13 April 28, 2022

The class explored the nature of God’s forgiveness and its impact on believers, beginning with a review of last week’s topic on why God forgives—rooted in His unchanging character. The teacher emphasized that God’s mercy and grace, exemplified in Exodus 34:6-7, reflect His essential love and justice. The discussion then turned to the theological implications of being forgiven, including the multifaceted nature of forgiveness as explained through Brother Everett Ferguson’s five categories: sacrifice, reconciliation, redemption, justification, and victory. The teacher also introduced Brother Dan Winkler’s concepts of covering, carving, casting, cloud, and concealing, using Psalm 32:1 as a key example of forgiveness as a ‘covering’ for sin. The lesson underscored how gratitude for God’s mercy enables believers to forgive others, creating a virtuous cycle of spiritual freedom. Practical applications were drawn from Moses’ prayer in Exodus 34:9, linking divine forgiveness to human reconciliation.

Exodus 34:6-7

The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.

Psalm 32:1

Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
