The Chosen Discussion

Lesson 7 of 19 December 5, 2022

The class explored the finale of *The Chosen* Season 1, focusing on the Samaritan woman’s encounter with Jesus (from John 4) and Nicodemus’s internal struggle (from John 3). The teacher emphasized the importance of historical context, particularly the scene from Genesis 33:18-20 where Jacob purchases land near Shechem, which later becomes the location of the well central to the Samaritan woman’s story. The discussion highlighted contrasts between characters’ responses to Jesus’ call, such as the Samaritan woman’s immediate zeal versus Nicodemus’s hesitation. Key scriptural references included Luke 5, where Jesus interacts with Pharisees and calls Matthew, and Genesis 33, which provided a backdrop for understanding Jesus’ mission. Central to the lesson was the theme of God’s unexpected methods in calling people to faith, even through challenging circumstances and relationships.

Genesis 33:18-20

Now Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Paddan Aram and camped before the city. He bought a piece of land where he had pitched his tent from the hand of the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, for one hundred pieces of money. Then he erected there an altar and called it El Eloi, Israel.
