Uniquely Luke

Lesson 3 of 9 February 1, 2024

The class explored Luke's emphasis on legitimizing John the Baptist and Mary through divine intervention and cultural context. John's story is framed as a miraculous, divinely foretold birth, with Luke highlighting Zechariah and Elizabeth's righteousness and the angel's proclamation of John's role as a prophet. Mary's betrothal was discussed in depth, revealing its legal and financial weight in first-century Galilean society, contrasting with modern understandings of engagement. Luke's unique portrayal of Mary's annunciation by Gabriel, including her question about the virgin birth and the angel's response, underscores her faith and the fulfillment of God's promises. The teacher also noted Luke's focus on the Magnificat, connecting Mary's song to broader themes of God's justice and mercy.

Luke 1:5-23

In the days of Herod, king of Judaea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the family of Abijah, and his wife Elizabeth, a daughter of the priested family of Aaron. Both of them were upright in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both of them were well advanced in years.

Luke 1:26-38

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, 'Greetings, O favoured one, the Lord is with you!' But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered how this greeting could be. And the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.' And Mary said to the angel, 'How will this be, since I am a virgin?' And the angel answered her, 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.'
