How to Forgive Your Accuser

Lesson 2 of 9 November 13, 2017

Pastor Richard Sutton's class focused on the critical theme of forgiveness in the Christian life, emphasizing that it is a must for believers, not a mere suggestion. Drawing from Ephesians 4:31-32, the lesson highlighted the call to be 'imitators of God' by being kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving others as God has forgiven us through Christ. The teacher explained that forgiveness involves both horizontal (toward others) and vertical (from God) dimensions, urging believers to mirror God's example of offering grace and reconciliation. He also explored the specific responsibilities of both offenders and the offended, referencing Matthew 5:23-24, which outlines the urgent need to reconcile with others before approaching God in worship. The class stressed that forgiveness is not passive but an active, transformative response rooted in Christ's sacrifice and God's love. The central message was that true forgiveness requires humility, self-reflection, and a commitment to living in right relationship with both God and others.

Ephesians 4:31-32

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 5:1

Therefore, be imitators of God as beloved children, and walk in love just as Christ also loves you and gave himself up for us, an offering of sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

Matthew 5:23-24

If therefore you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there you remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering therefore before the altar, go your way, first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.
