Book of Malachi - Wed PM Class
Teachers
Lesson Summary
The class explored Malachi 3:1-5, emphasizing the coming of the Messiah as a bringer of judgment and purification. Richard Sutton explained how God uses the imagery of a refiner’s fire and fuller’s soap to depict the Messiah’s role in purifying Israel, preparing them for a new covenant. The teacher connected Malachi’s prophecy to Jesus’ ministry, citing Luke 24:46-47 and Hebrews 9:14-15, showing how Jesus fulfills the call for repentance, forgiveness, and the establishment of a new covenant. Central to the lesson was the idea that God’s justice will ultimately prevail, and His people must turn back to Him to avoid divine judgment. The discussion also highlighted the universal scope of salvation, extending beyond Israel to all believers.
Key Scriptures
So he is almost with pinpoint accuracy. Malachi is saying that this is messianic. The Messiah is coming and just is going to be dealt out. Before him, there'll come a messenger... he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver... Then I will draw near to you for judgment...
Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead. And that repentance for the forgiveness of sin should be proclaimed in his name.
How much more will the blood of Christ... purify our conscience from dead works to serve a living God. Therefore he is a mediator of a new covenant...
