Good Heart Good Life

Lesson 13 of 13 June 27, 2022

Steve Zeller taught the final lesson in the 'Good Heart, Good Life' series by shifting focus from human characteristics to exploring the heart of God as the ultimate model for spiritual transformation. Rather than providing an exhaustive examination, Zeller selected eight attributes of God's heart to highlight how believers can better understand and trust in God's character. The teacher emphasized that God's heart is perfectly dependable—He never lies, never repents, and always keeps His promises, as demonstrated in Numbers 23:19. This dependability stands in stark contrast to human disappointment and failure. Zeller acknowledged that many people have left the church due to being hurt by others, yet he challenged the congregation to recognize that turning away from God because people have failed us means losing the relationship with the One who is completely reliable. Zeller also explored God's merciful heart through Micah 7:18-19, emphasizing that God doesn't merely show mercy out of obligation but delights in showing it. Using an illustration from his work in the cruise industry, he compared God's delight in mercy to the concept of 'surprise and delight'—where joy and grace are extended freely and generously. The teacher stressed that God wants His people to experience joy and freedom from guilt through His mercy, and that showing mercy brings genuine happiness both to the giver and receiver. Throughout the lesson, Zeller invited participants to pause, reflect, and marvel at God's amazing character, concluding with an interactive sharing activity to help believers internalize these truths about God's heart.

Numbers 23:19

God is not a man that he should lie, nor a son of man that he should repent. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not make it good?

Micah 7:18-19

Who is a God like you who pardons wrongdoing and passes over a rebellious act of the remnant of his possession? He does not retain his anger forever because he delights in mercy. He will again take pity on us. He will trample on our wrongdoings. Yes, you will cast their sins into the depths of the sea.
