Reset – Lessons Learned

Lesson 15 of 53 April 12, 2021

In this concluding message of the Reset series, Richard Sutton taught the congregation four valuable lessons learned over a year of pandemic disruption. The primary lesson emphasized was that humans are not as big, capable, or in control as they tend to believe. Sutton illustrated this humbling reality through the example of world leaders, scientists, and medical professionals who, despite their intelligence and resources, found themselves challenged and limited in controlling the pandemic. He referenced a conversation with his former doctor about how medical school teaches both the ways to keep people alive and the many more ways that people die, highlighting human limitations. The teacher then pivoted to the encouraging truth that while humanity's limitations have been exposed, Jesus Christ is infinitely greater and completely trustworthy. Using Colossians 1:15-17, Sutton taught that Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the creator of all things visible and invisible, and the one who holds all things together. This foundational theological truth—that God remains sovereign, on His throne, and in control regardless of human circumstances—was presented as the antidote to anxiety and fear. The class was designed to prepare the congregation for reopening and recommitment to ministry, with an upcoming ministry fair offering opportunities for members to reconnect with and join various congregational ministries.

Colossians 1:15-17

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for everything that was created in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
