Deuteronomy

Lesson 4 of 13 January 19, 2025

In this class on Deuteronomy, the teacher examined Moses's transition from recounting Israel's history to calling the people to renewed faithfulness. Moses had reminded Israel of both their failures—the reason they wandered in the wilderness—and their miraculous victories that demonstrated God's power. In Deuteronomy 4, Moses issued a call to obedience, emphasizing that the people must keep God's commands without adding to or taking away from them. This reflected the suzerain covenant structure in which God sets the terms and promises blessing for obedience and discipline for disobedience. The teacher drew striking parallels between Israel's covenant commitment and the New Covenant established through Christ. Just as Israel entered the covenant through circumcision, Christians enter through confession and baptism, committing to keep their end of the covenant. The lesson stressed that obedience to God produces blessing—not perfection or the absence of hardship, but God's provision and protection. The teacher challenged the congregation not to get caught up in the struggles of the present moment but to remember God's faithful provision throughout history, demonstrated ultimately through the cross and resurrection. The underlying message emphasized that Christians have a divine purpose and that remaining faithful to God's design for our lives, rather than veering off course, leads to genuine blessing. The class concluded by encouraging believers to do their part in the covenant relationship while trusting God to provide for their future.

Deuteronomy 4:1-4

Hear, O Israel. What your translation might say. Listen to the statutes and ordinances I am teaching you to follow so that you may live, enter, and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your fathers, is giving you. You must not add anything to what I command you or take anything away from it so that you may keep the commands of the Lord your God I am giving you.

Deuteronomy 4:3-4

Your eyes have seen what the Lord did at Baal Peor. For the Lord your God destroyed every one of you who followed Baal of Peor. But you who remained faithful to the Lord your God are still alive today.
