Knowing the Death of Jesus

Lesson 2 of 11 October 22, 2023

Teacher Clint Davison introduced a new quarter-long study focused on understanding the death of Jesus in detail. Rather than rushing through the crucifixion narrative, the class committed to examining the approximately 24 hours surrounding Jesus's final days, from just before the final Passover through the crucifixion itself. Davison drew a parallel to how we would want to know all the details if a loved one were on trial, emphasizing that Jesus's crucifixion is the monumental event of human history and deserves thorough examination. The class began by reviewing the anointing of Jesus at the home of Simon the leper in Bethany, found in Matthew 26:6-13. This scene presented a striking contrast: while hatred and tension surrounded Jesus as his arrest approached, Mary expressed profound love and devotion by anointing Jesus's feet with expensive perfume and washing them with her hair. Jesus himself interpreted this act as his anointing for burial, indicating his awareness of his impending death. Though the disciples objected to what they saw as wasteful, Jesus affirmed Mary's act of love and devotion. Davison established the framework for the quarter's study: examining every detail of the events surrounding the crucifixion to gain a comprehensive understanding of Christ's sacrifice. The class would move from the Passover preparation through the arrest, trial, and crucifixion, resisting the temptation to hurry through these crucial hours.

Matthew 26:6-13

When the disciples saw it, they were indignant. Why this waste? They asked. This might have even been sold for a great deal and given to the poor. Aware of this, Jesus said to them, Why are you bothering...
