Jesus left heaven to become a man - PM Sermon

Lesson 4 of 7 January 28, 2019

In this class, Clint Davison explored the profound reality of Jesus leaving heaven to become human—a truth often called the incarnation or advent of Christ. Using a personal story about his older brother's sacrifice in driving hours to watch him play football, Davison helped the congregation grasp the incomprehensible nature of Christ's sacrifice. He emphasized that Jesus voluntarily left the glory, majesty, and perfect fellowship of heaven where He existed as Creator and Ruler of all things. The teacher examined key scriptures including John 1:1-3, which establishes that Jesus (the Word) was with God and was God from the beginning, and that all creation came through Him. Colossians 1:16 reinforced that everything visible and invisible was created through Jesus and for Him. Most powerfully, Philippians 2:5-7 describes how Christ, though existing in the form of God, did not grasp equality with God but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant and the likeness of humanity. Davison stressed that understanding the incarnation should transform our perspective, as we contemplate not only what Jesus sacrificed but that He did so knowingly—fully aware of the suffering that awaited Him—and that He made this ultimate sacrifice personally for each of us.

John 1:1-3

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that has been made.

Colossians 1:16

For by Him were all things created, in the heavens and on the earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through Him and for Him.

Philippians 2:5-7

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
