Beyond the Basics

Lesson 9 of 10 December 15, 2024

Mike Jones led the congregation through a rich examination of biblical giving, challenging believers to think deeply about what has eternal value. The lesson began with a provocative question: Is there a 'currency of heaven,' and if so, what would it be? The teacher explored various forms of 'currency' people accumulate during their earthly lives—money, knowledge, material possessions, experiences, relationships, and wisdom—and then asked the critical question: what actually transfers to eternity? Using the illustration of a chess game where all pieces return to the same box regardless of rank, Mike helped the class see that earthly status and accumulation ultimately mean little in light of eternity. The core of the lesson focused on why God desires our giving, with an emphasis on seven specific benefits. First and foremost, giving makes us more like God, as demonstrated through Christ's ultimate gift of Himself. The teacher grounded this in key scriptures: 1 Corinthians 16:2, which speaks of setting aside money as one prospers, and 2 Corinthians 8:7, which presents giving as a grace to excel in, alongside faith, speech, and knowledge. A powerful passage from Matthew 6 illuminated the connection between where we place our treasures and where our hearts truly are—challenging believers to store up treasures in heaven rather than on earth. Throughout the discussion, Mike emphasized that giving encompasses far more than monetary contributions. It includes giving of ourselves, our time, and our talents in service to God and others. The lesson invited personal reflection on what believers truly value and what they're willing to sacrifice for Christ, ultimately pointing toward the reality that genuine wealth in God's economy consists of love, joy, peace, patience, and faithfulness—qualities that do transfer into eternity.

Matthew 6:19-21

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
