Sunday Night Sermon - Richard Sutton - June 14th

Lesson 39 of 50 June 15, 2020

During the June 14th class, the teacher examined the depth of Jesus' commitment as revealed in the Gospel of John. He highlighted several key statements—"Before Abraham was, I am," (John 8:28), "I and the Father are one" (John 10:30), and the pivotal declaration "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). He explained how these verses underscore Jesus as the sole conduit to the Father and emphasized the intimacy John had with Christ, reinforcing the gospel’s authority. The lesson reached its climax with a close reading of John 19:28‑30, where the crucified Savior said, "It is finished." The teacher connected this ultimate proclamation to the broader theme of personal commitment, recalling earlier lessons on committing all our ways to God, dedicating ourselves to worship, and maintaining unity (Ephesians 4:3). He urged believers to emulate Christ’s steadfastness by honoring their responsibilities to God, family, and community, concluding with an invitation to celebrate together at the upcoming July 5th gathering.

John 19:28-30

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, in order that the scriptures might be fulfilled, said, I am thirsty. A jar full of sour wine was standing there, and so they put a sponge full of sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to his mouth. When Jesus, therefore, had received the sour wine, he said, It is finished. And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
