Sunday Morning Lesson

Lesson 4 of 8 July 23, 2017

The teacher opened the class by addressing division within the congregation and reminded the listeners that, according to Paul, every believer shares the same standing before God because the same Spirit unites them through baptism. He examined the nature of baptism, questioning whether it is solely a physical water rite, an invisible spiritual immersion, or both, and used Acts 18 and Paul’s letters to the Corinthians to illustrate that early believers experienced a water baptism that signified a common spiritual reality. The lesson then shifted to the biblical distinction between the baptism of repentance spoken of by John the Baptist (Matthew 3:7‑11) and the promise of a baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire. The teacher compared passages such as Acts 2:38, Galatians 4:4‑7, and the account of Jesus’ own baptism (Matthew 3:13‑17) to argue that the Holy Spirit’s indwelling generally follows water baptism, though times may vary. He concluded that the baptism of fire represents future judgment, while the baptism of the Holy Spirit signifies the Spirit’s work in believers’ lives, emphasizing unity in the body of Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:13

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

Matthew 3:7-11

Then he said to the crowds who came to be baptized, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, "We have Abraham as our father." For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise children to Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. I baptize you with water for repentance, but after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire."

Acts 2:38

Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."
