The Chosen Discussion – Richard Sutton 11_6_22

Lesson 4 of 19 November 7, 2022

The class opened with a brief overview of Episode 5 of The Chosen, titled “If Not Now, When?” and used the episode’s wedding feast miracle as a springboard to discuss the concept of being chosen. The teacher guided participants to consider personal experiences of being selected and then linked those feelings to Scripture. Throughout the session, the group explored several passages—most notably John 15:16, where Jesus declares that He chose the disciples, and 1 Peter 2:9, which describes believers as a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, and a holy nation. The discussion emphasized that divine election is rooted in God’s eternal plan, yet it also requires a personal response. The teacher reminded the class that while many are called, only a few become the elect, echoing Jesus’ words that “many are called, but few are chosen.” By revisiting the calling of the first apostles by the Sea of Galilee, the class illustrated how God’s choosing leads to a radical life change, urging believers to bear fruit and live out their identity as God’s chosen people. In concluding remarks, the teacher encouraged participants to hold fast to their identity as chosen, to respond to God’s invitation today, and to allow that truth to shape their daily walk with Christ.

Ephesians 1:4

But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

1 Peter 2:9

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

John 15:16

You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He may give to you.
