Farther along a Capella hymn

Lesson 12 of 14 May 29, 2016

The class began by listening to the hymn “Farther Along,” which sets a tone of questioning suffering and longing for a future understanding of God’s purposes. The teacher explained that the hymn’s refrain – “Farther along, we’ll know all about it” – mirrors the biblical promise that present trials are temporary and will be clarified in the age to come. Scripture such as Romans 8:18 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13‑14 were unpacked, showing that the apostle Paul taught believers not to lose heart because present afflictions are nothing compared with the glory awaiting believers. The discussion also touched on Revelation 21:4, describing a future where God wipes away every tear, reinforcing the hymn’s hopeful outlook. After the theological exposition, the group reflected on practical ways to apply this hope, encouraging one another to “cheer up, my brother, live in the sunshine.” The class concluded that while we may not fully understand why the wicked prosper or why we face loss, the assured return of Christ and the promised new heaven give us confidence that ultimate justice and understanding will be revealed “by and by.” The teaching left participants with a renewed perspective to endure present hardships with faith and joy.
