Genesis_ Epic of God

Lesson 3 of 8 November 26, 2017

The teacher guided the class through Genesis chapter 18, focusing on the moment when the Lord appeared to Abraham near the trees of Mamre. He described Abraham’s humble position at the entrance of his tent during the hottest part of the day, his swift response to the three visitors, and his generous offer of water and bread. By examining the cultural context of hospitality in the ancient Near East, the teacher illustrated how Abraham’s actions modeled faith‑filled service and set a pattern for Christian generosity. Linking the Old‑Testament narrative to the New Testament, the teacher brought in 1 Corinthians 10:11 to show that the events recorded in Genesis serve as examples for us today. He emphasized that God does not permit temptations beyond our ability to endure and always provides an "exit door" for escape. The central message urged listeners to trust God’s provision, emulate Abraham’s hospitality, and recognize that the stories of the past are meant to guide our present challenges. Throughout the lesson, the teacher highlighted the relevance of Abraham’s aging, his partnership with Sarah, and the logistical marvel of hosting numerous guests, drawing parallels to modern family dynamics and leadership. By the end, the class was encouraged to apply these biblical principles to their own lives, fostering deeper reliance on God’s grace and wisdom.

Genesis 18:1-3

Later the Lord again appeared to Abraham near the trees of Mamre, and Abraham was sitting at the entrance of his tent during the hottest part of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When Abraham saw them, he ran from his tent to meet them and bowed down to the ground before them. He said, 'Sir, if you think well of me, please stay a while with me, your servant. I will bring some water so all of you can wash your feet. You may rest under the tree and I will get some bread for you so you can regain your strength. Then you may continue your journey.'
