Entrusting Your Vote to God - Richard Sutton - October 18th 2020

Lesson 13 of 24 October 18, 2020

The class began with Richard Sutton acknowledging the upcoming national election and the common tendency to view candidates through a lens of either idealization or condemnation. He emphasized that, as Christians, our voting decisions should be rooted in a reverence for God’s authority, referencing 2 Timothy 4:1‑2 where Paul charges Timothy to preach the whole counsel of God with urgency and conviction. Sutton then linked this charge to the necessity of seeking divine guidance when making civic choices. He further developed the theme by revisiting the seven qualities described in 2 Peter 1:5‑7—faith, virtue, knowledge, self‑control, perseverance, godliness, and brotherly love—explaining how these character traits should shape our discernment during election season. Sutton warned about the pitfalls of voting for mortals with human flaws and encouraged believers to pray, study Scripture, and allow the Holy Spirit to direct their vote, rather than being swayed by media sensationalism or partisan rhetoric. The central message was that trusting God with our vote reflects a deeper trust in His sovereign plan for the nation and the church.

2 Timothy 4:1-2

I charge you in the presence of God and Jesus Christ, who is the God of the living and dead, that you fight the good fight of faith, take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you proclaimed the message in the presence of God and Jesus Christ.
