Keynote_ God's Mercy – Hawatthia Jones

Lesson 6 of 21 October 14, 2023

In the class, Hiawatha Jones opened with a dramatic story about a man confronting a mother bear, using the tale to illustrate human judgment and desperate pleas for mercy. She shifted the focus to God’s unchanging compassion, emphasizing that unlike cancel culture, which instantly rejects and condemns, the Creator offers grace to every individual, regardless of sin, addiction, or background. The core of the lesson centered on Psalm 145:8‑9, which proclaim that the Lord is gracious, slow to anger, and good to all. Jones explained that these verses counteract modern attitudes of exclusion, urging believers to extend mercy to drug addicts, those with tattoos, and even the “people ruining the United States.” She concluded by challenging the congregation to thank God specifically for His mercy and to embody that mercy in daily life, rejecting the spirit of cancelation that pervades today’s culture.

Psalm 145:8-9

The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all his works.
