The Joy of the Lord - Gary Massey

Lesson 10 of 21 October 15, 2023

The class began with a grateful acknowledgment of the volunteers and staff who make Linder Road Church’s gatherings possible, especially highlighting the diligent work of secretary Lori Wheeler. Gary Massey then introduced the topic, “The Joy of the Lord,” using a colorful story about two hunting friends and a remarkable dog that could run across water, illustrating how some people, like the grieving friend in the tale, focus only on negatives despite blessings around them. Turning to Scripture, Gary examined Nehemiah chapter 8, describing how the returned exiles gathered at the water gate, listened as Ezra read the Law, and struggled with the weight of their covenant obligations. He highlighted verses 8:8, which explains the translation of the Law for understanding, and 8:10, where Nehemiah commands the people to eat, rejoice, and remember that “the joy of the Lord is your strength.” The teacher emphasized that this joy is not merely an emotion but a divine empowerment that sustains the community in times of rebuilding and uncertainty. He concluded by encouraging the congregation to embody that joy through grateful service and organized leadership.

Then he said to them, Go eat of the fat, drink of the sweet, and send portions to him who has nothing prepared. For this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.
