Extravagant Love

Lesson 6 of 32 February 14, 2022

The class opened with a reminder of the earlier teaching on God’s amazing love and shifted focus to the concept of extravagant love, using the anointing of Jesus at Bethany as the central illustration. The teacher described the tense atmosphere in Jerusalem as the chief priests plotted to seize Jesus by stealth (Mark 14:1‑2) during the sacred Passover festival, contrasting it with the intimate, joyous setting of the Bethany dinner where Mary, identified as the sister of Martha, broke an expensive alabaster jar of pure nard and poured it over Jesus’ head (John 12:1‑8; Matthew 26:6‑13). He emphasized that this act symbolized a love that goes beyond words, a costly devotion that outshines the surrounding treachery. Further insight was provided by linking John’s record of many becoming believers because of the resurrection of Lazarus (John 12:11) to the same gathering, highlighting the growing impact of Jesus’ ministry. The teacher encouraged the congregation to emulate Mary’s extravagant love, allowing their lives to reflect the fragrance of Christ’s presence. The lesson concluded by urging believers to let such love transform their actions toward others, echoing the overarching theme of self‑sacrificial devotion. Overall, the class taught that extravagant love is demonstrated through humble, costly gestures that honor Christ and inspire others, challenging believers to embody that love in daily life.
