Leading to Jesus - Clint Davison - 2025_11_23

Lesson 7 of 13 November 23, 2025

The class examined 2 Samuel chapter 7, focusing on verses 12 through 16, to illuminate the Davidic covenant—a divine promise that a descendant of David would establish an everlasting kingdom. The teacher highlighted how God’s pledge—"I will raise up your offspring after you... I will establish his throne forever"—contrasts sharply with human leadership models that are temporary and fallible. By juxtaposing modern examples of successful coaches, CEOs, and cultural icons with God’s unchanging covenant, the class emphasized that earthly dynasties are fleeting, whereas God’s kingdom, fulfilled in Jesus, endures eternally. Students learned that Israel’s longing for a visible king was ultimately redirected toward a spiritual king who reigns through the promise to David. The teacher explained that God’s promise was not about building a physical temple or political empire, but about establishing a lasting relationship, identity, and authority that surpasses any human institution. The discussion concluded that believers are called to submit to this divine authority, living under the reign of Christ, the true and everlasting King.

2 Samuel 7:12-16

when your time comes, he's talking to David here, when your time comes and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up after you, your descendant who will come from your body and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my name and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with the rod of men and blows from mortals. But my faithful love will never leave him as it did when I removed it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and kingdom will endure before me forever and your throne will be established forever.
