Christian character Class

Lesson 4 of 12 May 4, 2019

The class opened with the teacher recalling Peter’s moment of faith on the water, using it as a picture of outward courage that follows inner commitment. After a brief reminder of Ruth’s declaration to Naomi (Ruth 1:16‑17) as another model of steadfast devotion, the focus shifted to the theme of courage. The teacher explained that courage is not merely a virtue but the testing ground for every virtue, quoting C.S. Lewis, and emphasized that true courage involves acting despite fear. The discussion then turned to Scripture, especially Joshua 1:5‑9, where God repeatedly urges Joshua to be strong, courageous, and unafraid, promising His constant presence. Participants examined why God emphasizes His presence three times, linking it to the reassurance needed when facing great challenges. Contemporary applications were explored, such as the courage required in marriage and daily decision‑making, and the danger of letting fear make faith conditional. The class concluded with practical steps for living out courageous faith, trusting that God, who was with Moses and Aaron, will likewise empower each believer today.

Joshua 1:5-9

No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. This is God talking to Joshua. I will be with you just as I was with Moses. I will not leave you or abandon you. Be strong and courageous for you. You will distribute the land I swore to their fathers to give them as an inheritance. Above all, and he says the same thing again, above all, be strong and very courageous to observe carefully the whole instruction. My servant Moses commanded you do not turn from it to the right or to the left so that you will have success wherever you go. This book of instructions must not depart your mouth. You are to meditate it, meditate on it day and night that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For when for then, excuse me, for then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. Haven't I commanded you? And this is like the third time right here. Haven't I commanded you be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged for the Lord. Your God is with you wherever you go.
