Leading to Jesus

Lesson 2 of 13 November 2, 2025

The class began by explaining why God gave the Law of Moses, emphasizing that the Law revealed both His absolute holiness and the Israelites' profound sinfulness. Through a close reading of Exodus 19 and 20, the teacher highlighted how God demanded reverence, setting strict boundaries and displaying His power through thunder, lightning, and a smoking mountain. The people’s fearful response illustrated their need for a mediator, which the teacher linked to Moses' role under the Old Covenant. The discussion then shifted to the purpose of the Law, showing that it primarily exposed sin, as echoed in Romans 3:20. The instructor explained that the sacrificial system was temporary, pointing forward to Jesus as the perfect and everlasting Mediator who fulfills the Law’s demands. By the end of the session, participants understood that the Law served to guide Israel, reveal humanity’s need for redemption, and ultimately point to Christ’s once‑for‑all sacrifice, confirming that the same holy God worshipped today is the one who gave the Law. Overall, the class reaffirmed that the Law’s true function was to prepare hearts for Jesus, the only one capable of bridging the gap between a holy God and sinful people.

Exodus 20:18-19

When the people saw that the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain and smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen, but do not have God speak to us or we will die."

Romans 3:20

For no one can ever be made right with God by simply doing what the law commands.
