Pentecost - Children's Bible Class

Lesson 9 of 28 July 16, 2020

In the class, Lori Sutton introduced Pentecost as the starting point of the church that Jesus gave his life for. She reminded the children that the Book of Acts follows the Gospels and records the apostles’ actions, especially the promise Jesus gave before his ascension: they would receive power to be witnesses throughout the world (Acts 1:8). The lesson explained that Pentecost, celebrated 50 days after Passover, gathered Jews from many nations, each speaking different languages. As the Holy Spirit descended like a rushing wind and tongues of fire, the apostles began speaking those languages, fulfilling Joel’s ancient prophecy (Joel 2:28‑32). Peter then addressed the crowd, pointing out that the crucified Jesus was both Lord and Messiah, urging the listeners to repent, be baptized, and receive the forgiveness offered through Christ (Matthew 28:19‑20). The children heard how the Holy Spirit empowers believers today to share the gospel across cultures and how the early church’s experience still shapes our faith. The class emphasized that Pentecost demonstrates God’s promise to empower believers with the Holy Spirit, enabling them to become bold witnesses. It connected the historical event with the ongoing mission of the church, encouraging each student to rely on the Holy Spirit for courage, repentance, and a heart for evangelism.
